Beyond honored to be referenced in this great blog post by my mentor Brian Willis. He perfectly articulates The Power of One.
“You are not responsible for solving all of the world’s problems. You are, however, responsible for contributing to the solution.” Scott Westerman
One of my favorite blogs is the Monday Motivator by Scott Westerman. Scott is the Vice president of the Michigan State University Alumni Association. He is a successful businessman and a very gifted writer. The following is a brief excerpt from a Monday Motivator blog post titled Turning the Page:
When I had lunch with a graduating senior the other day, he admitted being frightened of entering the outside world. “There are so many challenges we face,” he said. “I’m not sure I have the ability to make a real difference in the real world.”
I tried to reassure him that any person with passion and perseverance can move the needle. “You are not responsible for solving all of the world’s problems. You are, however, responsible for contributing to the solution.”
That last statement by Scott struck me as profound advice. At my seminars I hear so many people who are frustrated because they think they need to have all the answers and who feel they are somehow personally responsible for solving all the problems of the world. That frustration leads to feelings of being overwhelmed and eventually to people giving up. They get caught up in the thoughts and feelings of what can I do?
· I am only one person.
· I am not rich and powerful.
· I am not an influential world leader.
· I am just an ordinary working person.
As Scott pointed out any person with passion and perseverance can move the needle and make a difference. You can make a difference. The first step is to focus on what you control. Focus on the things within your sphere of influence. The following is a quote I use in my presentation Your Life IS Your Legacy to address this specific issue:
“One person can make a difference. You don’t have to be a big shot. You don’t have to have a lot of influence. You just have to have faith in your power to change things.”
Norman Vincent Peale
The next step is to take action. What’s Important Now is to decide what you are going to do to make a difference and commit to taking the first step. Determine what you need to stop doing, start doing, change and continue doing to make a difference in your life, in your relationships, in your productivity? It is through these actions you will move the needle and contribute to the solution.
Take care and always remember Life’s Most Powerful Question – What’s Important Now?
