How to Age Ungracefully

I turn 70 on Monday. That’s hard to process when your inner age perception is still somewhere in your 20s.

I’ve been thinking a lot about what it is that keeps some of us running at full steam well into our 80s, while others retreat to the recliner.

It feels like this is a key: Don’t retire. Refocus.

It’s ok to keep throwing cash into your bank accounts. But aging reminds us to focus on the things we’ve always wanted to do; being instantly available for your kids and grandkids, getting more involved with issues important to you, investing in your health through better fuel and regular exercise, and my dad’s favorite advice to “old people,” make younger friends.

Engaging the next generation keeps your mind open and sharp. Listen to their stories and share your wisdom.

The happiest people I know who are my age are those who redefine their purpose to fit their current capacities. And don’t put off that bucket list. Travel while you can still enjoy it. Reconnect with long lost friends.

Live with such enthusiasm that when it’s your turn to get some wings, everybody will say, “I had no idea he was -that- old.”
