When I look around and see hate speech spreading so easily online, I feel two strong emotions: anger and sadness. Anger that anyone would hurt someone because of their background, who they love, or what they believe. And sadness that so many join in without a second thought.
But now is our time to change that. What the world needs is thoughtful people—people who hold back from judging, give feedback constructively, and forgive quickly. Don’t take things at face value. When you hear something shocking, ask questions, seek to understand, and remember the power of forgiveness. It frees both you and others.
As a kid, my father taught me not to judge the many by the actions of the few. He taught me about diverse leaders who fought to create opportunities for all. He said that hate can’t survive in an environment filled with empathy and positive action—and that environment starts within us.
Real change is hard, but it requires faith. Fear makes us feel stuck. So start small, find your faith in little things, a beach walk, meaningful music, the beauty of a child,
Life gives us scars, but each one is a sign we were stronger than what tried to hurt us. Let those scars be badges of honor. Keep moving forward and keep doing good things—anyway. As George Harrison reminded us, “All Things Must Pass.” Time can heal, if we keep pressing forward… and let it.
And finally, remember: What the world needs now is love. Dr. King taught us that only light can drive out darkness, and only love can drive out hate. Surround yourself with people who lift you up and remove negativity from your life. Invest your time in meaningful projects, with people who truly care.
Together, we can bring love and unity to the world. And on the days when it feels like you’ll never make it, remember this: every advance began in the mind of just one person, someone who wasn’t sure it could ever become real, but chased it anyway.
You are stronger than you know, and the world needs you. You may just be the miracle it’s waiting for.
