At its essence, freedom symbolizes liberation, autonomy, and the ability to make choices without undue restraint. One lesson we seem to need to re-learn over and over is this: Freedom isn’t free.
From the beginning of the American experiment, freedom has involved immense sacrifice. Struggle, persecution, violence, and death walk hand-in hand with the quest.
Maintaining balance between individual liberty and social responsibility can be a delicate task. It requires mindfulness about the consequences of our actions and recognition that liberty comes with the responsibility to respect the well-being of others.
Personal growth and self-actualization require sacrificing immediate gratification, taking risks, and investing time and effort in causes and principles that align with our values. The cost of freedom goes beyond an ephemeral tweet or an over-simplified sound byte. It requires dedication, perseverance, and the willingness to stand up for our beliefs.
Over the past year, we’ve seen stark examples of how freedom is not a static state. It requires constant vigilance. It necessitates being actively engaged in democratic processes, defending human rights, the Constitution and advocating for justice. Preserving freedom demands an informed and participatory citizenry that remains attentive against the continual encroachments on the liberties we hold dear.
As we reflect on the price paid by past generations for the lives we currently enjoy, let us remember that freedom is a never guaranteed. Its ongoing cost is constant care, dedication, and unwavering commitment.
Have a safe and happy 4th of July holiday.
